Inside Royal Caribbean’s New $600M Destination Featuring the Tallest Slide in the Americas

Imagine floating down the world’s longest lazy river, then sipping a margarita beneath the world’s largest sombrero—all before lunch.

That’s the promise of Perfect Day Mexico, Royal Caribbean’s upcoming private destination in Mahahual, opening in fall 2027. With 230 acres of thrills and beachside chill, it’s the cruise stop everyone will be talking about.

Designed to handle over 20,000 guests per day, the new port will feature a mix of large-scale attractions, quiet beach areas, and experiences inspired by the local culture.

With a mix of high-thrill slides and calmer zones designed for downtime, the port is meant to offer something for every type of cruiser. According to CEO Michael Bayley, the project is “bigger and bolder than anything we have done to date.”

Fiesta Plaza: Where the Party Starts

The moment guests step off the ship at Perfect Day Mexico, they’ll arrive in Fiesta Plaza—a vibrant, high-energy welcome zone that sets the tone for the entire day.

Designed to reflect the lively spirit of Mexico, the plaza bursts to life with live music, folkloric dancers, and roaming Mariachi bands, creating a festive atmosphere from the very first step ashore.

At the center of Fiesta Plaza rises the world’s largest sombrero, a towering 65-foot (20 m) tall structure perched above the Tipsy Sombrero Bar. It’s a striking visual landmark and an inviting first stop for guests looking to sip a margarita or cold cerveza in the heart of the action.

Surrounding the plaza are 12 regionally inspired dining options—most included in your cruise fare—and 24 bars, including six swim-up options. For a more laid-back way to explore, guests can hop on a trajinera-style water taxi that glides through canals lined with bold Mexican architecture.

Loco Waterpark: Home to the Tallest Slide in the Americas

For thrill-seekers, Loco Waterpark is the beating heart of Perfect Day Mexico. This massive, paid-access zone is home to more than 30 slides across five towers, but the centerpiece is undeniably Jaguar’s Peak.

At 170 ft. (52 m) tall, it holds the title of the tallest waterslide tower in North and South America, and it’s hard to miss—crowned by a dramatic jaguar head that overlooks the park.

Jaguar’s Peak features 10 slides, each designed to push limits. Families or groups can take on the tallest raft slide built for 4 to 6 riders, while adrenaline junkies can race down dueling slides that last an intense two minutes from top to bottom.

One standout is the longest water coaster in the world, with twists, drops, and momentum-driven climbs that create a fast-paced ride like no other. There’s also the world’s first sombrero slide, a swirling helix structure inspired by Mexico’s iconic hat.

If that’s not enough, a cluster of hydrolaunch slides gives riders the feeling of being launched into the air—literally. These slides are positioned near a swim-up viewing bar, so spectators can grab a drink and watch the action unfold.

For those wanting a break from the drops, Loco Waterpark also includes a resort-style pool, a wave pool, and dedicated splash zones for younger guests. It’s a high-energy hub built for all ages—as long as you’re ready to pay.

Splash Cove & The World’s Longest Lazy River

If you’re after a more laid-back kind of fun, Splash Cove is the go-to zone—and unlike the waterpark, it’s completely free to access. The centerpiece is the world’s longest lazy river, a winding waterway that can take nearly an hour to float from start to finish.

But there’s more to it than just floating. Guests can grab drinks at float-up bars, stash them in the cupholders built into every tube, or even clip on a small cooler for the ride.

What sets this lazy river apart is the unexpected twist—literally. At one point, the river splits into a “crazy river” section for those craving more action, complete with rapids, spins, and sudden waves. Guests on land can even join in the fun by activating interactive water jets to splash friends as they float by.

Nearby, a massive 100,000-square-foot (9,300 sq m) pool—three times the size of Oasis Lagoon—sits at the center of the area, surrounded by Royal Caribbean’s largest Splashaway Bay. Families can also book Splashaway Cabanas for a shaded spot close to the action.

Chill Beach North & South: Two Miles of Pure Bliss

For those looking to slow the pace, Chill Beach North & South delivers on its name. This beautiful stretch of nearly two miles of white-sand beach offers plenty of space to unwind—whether that means sunbathing, wading into turquoise waters, or simply enjoying the view.

Along the shoreline, you’ll find complimentary loungers, umbrellas, and towels, so there’s no need to reserve anything in advance—just pick your spot and relax.

The beach areas are designed with a playful, colorful style inspired by traditional Mexican toy tops. At Chill Beach South, there’s even a dedicated taco-and-margarita stand, perfect for a casual bite with a seaside breeze.

Scattered throughout the area, local artisan markets offer handmade crafts and souvenirs, while food stands serve a mix of Mexican favorites and American comfort dishes—making it easy to grab a snack without straying far from your beach chair.

Costa Beach Club: VIP Luxury for the Laid-Back Traveler

For guests looking to elevate their beach day, Costa Beach Club offers a more exclusive and serene alternative within Perfect Day Mexico.

This premium, paid-access area is designed for those who prefer a quieter, upscale experience—complete with a heated infinity pool, a swim-up bar, and a relaxed atmosphere away from the crowds.

The standout here is the collection of private cabanas, which come packed with thoughtful extras. Each one includes its own semi-private plunge pool, personal attendant service, shaded loungers, private bathroom, and access to premium dining, all included with the reservation.

El Hideaway: Adults-Only Chill with a Splash of Fun

If you’re craving a day without cannonballs and kids’ splash zones, El Hideaway is your dedicated adults-only oasis. This 18+ only area, accessible with a paid day pass, offers a completely different vibe from the family-friendly zones.

At the center is a massive 50,000-square-foot (4,600 sq m) zero-entry pool, giving plenty of space to either kick back or turn up the energy. Overlooking it all is the world’s largest tequila bottle, a bold landmark that fits right in with the fun, festive atmosphere.

For groups, the Ultimate Party Cabana takes things up a notch—with room for 20 people, a private pool, dedicated bartender, and even its own bathroom.

Welcome to Mahahual: Mexico’s Next Big Cruise Port

Perfect Day Mexico is set along the Caribbean coast of Mahahual, a small beach town in Mexico’s Costa Maya region. Known for its turquoise waters, easy access to coral reefs, and relaxed, off-the-beaten-path vibe, Mahahual is a popular stop for cruisers looking for natural beauty and culture.

The town is also a gateway to nearby Mayan ruins, snorkeling tours, and local artisan markets, offering visitors more than just a day at the beach.

Unlike destinations that were retrofitted for cruise travel, Perfect Day Mexico is being built from the ground up, giving Royal Caribbean a rare opportunity to design the guest experience with intention—from layout and transportation to cultural immersion.

While the private port will offer a self-contained experience, Royal Caribbean is also building a welcome center within the existing Costa Maya port to better connect all cruise passengers—not just its own—with local infrastructure and experiences.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

Bookings for Perfect Day Mexico open in fall 2025, with sailings launching in fall 2027. Itineraries will depart from Galveston, New Orleans, and Florida homeports, and many cruises will include both Perfect Day at CocoCay and Perfect Day Mexico.

Entry to the destination is free for all Royal Caribbean passengers, and most dining options—featuring a mix of regional Mexican cuisine and American classics—are included in your cruise fare.

That said, some experiences come at an additional cost. These include access to Loco Waterpark, the premium Costa Beach Club, the adults-only El Hideaway, as well as private cabanas and other premium amenities.

Whether you’re there for the lazy river, the tallest slide in the Americas, or a quiet taco on the beach, it’s worth planning ahead—especially if you’re hoping to secure space in one of the paid areas, which are expected to book out quickly.
