Dramatic Video Captures Moment MSC Cruise Ship Rescues 19 People on Rough Seas

Cruise passengers aboard MSC Splendida in late October witnessed something few ever do—a real-life rescue at sea. The 1090 ft. (333 m) ship, sailing off the coast of Mallorca, Spain, diverted its course to save 19 migrants, including two young children, who were struggling to survive in rough waters.

The incident occurred on October 26, 2025, as MSC Splendida neared the end of a four-night Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Genoa. Around 4 p.m., Spanish authorities alerted the ship to a small vessel in distress about 20 nautical miles south of the Cabrera Archipelago off Mallorca’s southern tip. Maritime law required the nearest ship to respond—and Splendida was closest.

What passengers saw next was nothing like the usual trivia contests or towel-folding demos that fill a cruise’s final afternoon. An overcrowded dinghy, already taking on water, drifted in choppy seas as some of its passengers jumped overboard, desperate to reach safety.

Crew members rushed into action, throwing life rings and lowering ladders as the massive ship battled wind and waves. Several attempts to climb up were knocked back by the swell before the exhausted migrants finally managed to grab hold and be pulled aboard.

The Heroes Behind the Rescue

According to MSC Cruises, the ship’s safety team, led by Captain Giuseppe Maresca and Safety Officer Antonio Bovento, coordinated the operation, which lasted just over thirty minutes. Every one of the 19 people—16 men, one woman, and two children aged three and four—was rescued.

“Every seafarer always puts safety first, and saving lives at sea is part of our DNA,” Captain Maresca said afterward. “My crew acted with professionalism and care to make sure this rescue was carried out safely in difficult conditions.”

The crew’s composure and teamwork earned praise from both MSC Cruises and Samoa Shipping Services (SSS), which employs many of Splendida’s Samoan seafarers. SSS called it “a proud moment for our nation’s mariners,” recognizing 14 crew members by name, while Captain Maresca hosted a private dinner to thank them personally.

Passengers Watched History Happen

For guests on board, it was a moment that would stick with them long after disembarkation. Some recorded the rescue and shared footage on social media, including the TikTok account MSC.Friends, which posted a clip showing migrants climbing a rope ladder while crew members reached down to help.

The video quickly made the rounds online and got people talking about what being at sea can really mean—even on a cruise. For many travelers, it was a reminder that the same waters where they sail for fun are also the ones others cross out of desperation.

From Crisis to Compassion

After everyone was safely aboard, MSC Splendida continued toward Barcelona, its final destination, where the rescued group was handed over to Spanish authorities and placed under the care of social services.

Maritime experts note that while rare for cruise ships, rescues like this are part of a long seafaring tradition. Under international law (SOLAS), all vessels must aid those in distress. With migrant crossings from North Africa on the rise, such emergencies are becoming more common—just days earlier, Norwegian Epic rescued 63 people in the Ionian Sea.

A Reminder of Shared Humanity at Sea

Once the ship docked in Barcelona, the story of the rescue spread worldwide, celebrated as an example of seamanship and compassion. For the rescued families from the Maghreb region of North Africa, the cruise ship’s timely arrival meant survival. For the crew, it was another day living out the oldest rule of the ocean: you never ignore a call for help.

For passengers, it was a moment that offered perspective—a rare glimpse into what life at sea can truly demand. Many were struck by how quickly an ordinary cruise day turned into an act of survival and compassion.

More Than a Voyage

This wasn’t the first time MSC crews have stepped up to save lives at sea, and it likely won’t be the last. These rescues aren’t done for headlines or praise—they’re part of a long seafaring tradition and a reminder of the compassion that drives those who work at sea.

As Captain Maresca said, saving lives is part of a sailor’s DNA. What began as a routine sea day ended as a powerful reminder that even amid the comfort of modern cruising, the ocean still brings out the best of our shared humanity.
