A Louisiana man says what was supposed to be a relaxing seven-day Carnival cruise quickly turned into a nightmare after staff refused to accept the birth certificate he’d been using for years.
Brian, who posts on TikTok as @briankeithw, said he and his partner arrived at the Port of New Orleans excited for a Western Caribbean cruise. The trip was also meant to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.
But instead of boarding the ship and starting their vacation, the pair ended up stranded in New Orleans while most of their luggage sailed away without them.
A Problem With His Birth Certificate

Brian explained the experience in a series of TikTok videos.
He said the morning had started normally, with the couple getting ready and heading to the cruise terminal in good spirits.
“We got inside and it all went ‘pbbt’ after that,” he said.
According to Brian, Carnival staff wouldn’t accept his birth certificate as proper travel documentation.
That came as a surprise because he says he has owned the document for almost 60 years and used it for cruises without a problem. He claimed the same certificate was accepted less than a year earlier and had worked for him on cruises for more than a decade.
In response to one TikTok commenter, Brian said he brought both his driver’s license and birth certificate.
“This cruise left out of New Orleans and was going to West Caribbean,” he wrote. “Passport was not required, but an acceptable documentation.”
Brian claims Carnival staff instead took issue with the seal on his birth certificate.
Do You Actually Need a Passport to Board a Carnival Cruise?
The incident sparked plenty of debate online, with some people questioning why Brian hadn’t simply travelled with a passport.
One commenter told him it was “common knowledge” that people should have a passport when taking a cruise.
However, a passport isn’t always required for American citizens taking certain cruises.
For many so-called closed-loop cruises, which leave from and return to the same U.S. port, passengers can use other forms of documentation.
Carnival says U.S. citizens on eligible cruises can present a government-issued photo ID together with an original or copy of a government-issued birth certificate.
Carnival’s published policy says a clear photocopy of a birth certificate originally issued by a government agency can be accepted, and that the copy doesn’t need to be notarized or certified.
The company’s published rules don’t specifically state that a birth certificate must have a raised seal.
Carnival does, however, warn that documents such as hospital-issued birth notices and certain other records aren’t accepted as substitutes for an official government-issued birth certificate.
Exactly why Brian’s document was rejected remains unclear. Carnival hasn’t publicly explained his specific case.

Missing the cruise wasn’t the end of the couple’s problems. Brian said they’d already handed over their luggage before finding out they wouldn’t be allowed to travel, leaving staff to try to retrieve the bags before the ship departed.
After waiting around three-and-a-half to four hours, Brian says just one of their four suitcases was returned, and unfortunately, it mainly contained shoes.
“We’re gonna be wearing shoes around our necks tomorrow and covering up our personals,” he joked.
The remaining bags apparently stayed aboard the ship and continued on the cruise without them. “My clothes got to go on the cruise,” Brian joked. “I hope they take pictures.”
A later TikTok appeared to show one of his suitcases finally arriving back home after the cruise ended roughly a week later.
‘Escorted Out Like Common Criminals’
Brian was also unhappy with how he and his partner were treated after being denied boarding, claiming cruise personnel escorted them from the terminal.
“They escorted us out like we’re a couple of common criminals,” he said.
The couple then had to get an Uber, return to their vehicle and find somewhere to stay in New Orleans, but even that didn’t go smoothly.
Brian said the first hotel room they were given hadn’t been properly cleaned, describing an unmade bed, overflowing trash and a dirty towel in the bathroom. Hotel staff eventually moved them to another room.
They Tried to Make the Best of It

Despite everything that happened, Brian and his partner decided not to spend the entire week feeling miserable. The pair headed to Bourbon Street, ate nachos and tried to make the most of their unexpected stay in New Orleans.
There was also the question of whether they’d get their cruise money back.
Carnival’s policy states that passengers who don’t have the required travel documents can be denied boarding without receiving a refund of their cruise fare, while Brian said he’d purchased Carnival’s vacation protection plan but still wasn’t getting his money back.
Carnival’s protection plan doesn’t necessarily guarantee a cash refund in every situation. Its cancel-for-any-reason coverage can instead provide a future cruise credit worth a percentage of the non-refundable cost.
Carnival hasn’t publicly commented on Brian’s specific allegations or explained exactly why his birth certificate was considered unacceptable.
The incident also shows why cruise documentation can become complicated even when a passport isn’t technically required.
Birth certificates can be accepted on some closed-loop cruises, but passengers still need to make sure the document they bring meets the cruise line’s requirements. Travelling with a passport can also help avoid this kind of problem at the terminal.
